Bon Jour, 'Aparisyon'

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino independent film “Aparisyon” (international title “Apparition”) is set to compete in France for the 15th Deauville Asian Film Festival.
As posted on the film’s website, “Aparisyon” by Filipino director Vincent Sandoval has been selected as one of seven feature films in competition for the festival’s March 6 to 10, 2013 run. The horror film is nominated for the Lotus d’Or (Golden Lotus) Award for Best Picture. Sandoval will be in attendance, announced the website.
Starring Jodi Sta. Maria, Mylene Dizon, Raquel Villavicencio, and Fides Cuyugan-Asensio, “Aparisyon” follows the story of secluded nuns set in the pre-Martial Law era.
The festival programmer’s notes on “Aparisyon,” as posted on Deauville Asian Film Festival’s website, read “APPARITION offers a profound reflection on sin, guilt and faith, rooted in a specific historical and political context highlighted by the sophistication of the staging.”
It also commended “Filipino filmmaker based in New York” Sandoval, who “founded in 2009 IndioBravo Film Foundation, which allows the American public to discover the Philippine independent cinema. The same year, he wrote, directed and starred in his first short film, SENORITA, screened at many international festivals, including Cannes and Vancouver.”
Brillante Mendoza’s “Thy Womb” is only the other Filipino film in the festival’s official selection, which will be screening outside of competition.
